The difference between Texas and Iowa

Well since Texas and Iowa are part of the same country there probably shouldn't be a whole lot of difference.  We haven't been here a long time...only a few months but for all of us the biggest issue here in Texas is the driving.  I have never seen such awful drivers.  Iowans are cautious drivers and are very aware of the laws of the road and they are followed.  Texas, not so much.  Honestly, if I don't see an ambulance and police car at an accident at least once a day I would think something was wrong.

Can you imagine what that's like for a mother of two 16 year olds driving?  Although my kids have both recognized that the drivers here are pretty much awful it still worries me.

Mostly the driving issues are that they just do stupid things.  There are rules to the road, people!  You cannot make a two way stop into a four way stop.  It just doesn't work that way.

We also are realizing that we more like the minority in Texas.  Everyone seems to be of Hispanic descent.  You don't need to speak English in Houston.  It kind of makes me feel like I'm in another country.  Some billboards are in Spanish only where everything else is at least in English/Spanish.  Even announcements on the intercoms in the stores are often times in English and then Spanish.

The grocery stores here in Houston carry a large array of Hispanic foods that you would find common place in Mexico.  In Iowa you certainly cannot buy banana leaves in bulk at the local grocery store.   Also in Iowa when you went to a Mexican restuarant you almost always got your food in flour tortillas but I don't think flour tortillas are traditional in all Mexican foods because most of the Mexican food we eat here seems to be in corn tortillas.  I don't like corn tortillas by the way.

We are quite thrilled to learn that Dr Pepper is common like Coke here.  Ordering Dr Pepper at a restuarant in Iowa was hit and miss.  Here, it's always served.  Makes the Fairchild girls very happy.

Then there are the shopping carts.  They are carts, ok?  Shopping carts!  No, not in Texas.  They are buggies.  That drives me crazy.  It's a stupid word.

I'm sure there are more differences that we have not realized yet.  Just more to discover I guess!

I can't decide!!!!

For homeschool my teenagers had to learn about Republican candidates and decide which one they would support if they were going to the Iowa Caucus.  I was really very proud of them.  Neither wanted to be convinced by something they read but rather wanted a candidate that met their requirements.  My daughter decided on Rick Perry the former Gov of Texas.  She said he met her check off list...including capital punishment.  My son chose John Hunstman former Gov of Utah.  Huntsman he said had job growth in Utah.

The problem with this assignment was that Mom/Teacher couldn't decide on a candidate!  I knew some were definately out, no to Romney and Paul.  I thought I could support Rick Perry but his irresponsible attitude on illegal immigrants is stomach turning for me.  I just want them gathered up and dropped off on their side of the border.

I started to read over Michele Bachmann from Minnesota.  I've never been a fan of Michele.  Not that you have to be a fan of a candidate.  But, Michele's stand on the issues are the same as mine.  I like what she says and I believe she could be a strong leader.  Unfortunately, Michele probably won't make it out of New Hampshire.  I hope she does though.

The thought of another 4 years with Obama is just too much to stomach.  We as Republicans really need to join forces and support a truly conservative candidate.  I should stop blogging and get out this house and support a candidate.

Now, where is that Republican Headquarters in Houston.........

Addiction is tough to break

I can't seem to break this addiction.  I'm losing sleep over it.  Yes, I am addicted to Criminal Minds, the TV series.  Stupid show is on Youtube for free to watch and so I can't help myself.  I've not gotten to bed until 2:30am some nights watching episodes.  This wouldn't be so bad but I go to sleep thinking about all these serial killers so you can imagine my dreams!

So I'm explaining this addiction I have to Criminal Minds to my 16 year old daughter and she goes on to tell me she stays up late at night to watch the reruns of it too.  Here we were staying up in separate rooms watching the same show and we never knew all these months.  Like mother, like daughter or what?!!!

Another nonsense post, but hey, I type what I think.  One day it might be a TV series the next it's the election or some Bible verse.  I am a scatterbrain.

Merry Christmas from Texas

It's Christmas Eve day here in Texas.  Our first Christmas here.  It's pouring and cold, not what I had in mind.  Apparently it's warmer in Iowa right now.  Figures.

My Savior's family were settling into stable about this time and preparing for the most important birth of all time.  Oh how I wish I were able to experience Christmas in Bethlehem.  But, Jesus is as present here in our little house in Texas as he is in Israel.  I know this and I rejoice in it.

Merry Christmas world.  Join me in giving thanks and praises to the Most High for His grace and unconditional love.

Our Homeschool plans for 2nd semester starting Jan 2012

I'm homeschooling 3 children...Ben and Kendell are 16, juniors in high school.  Julia is 11 and is in 6th grade, however I have skipped a lot of 6th grade curriculum.

Ben and Kendell:
Chemistry is Apologia at the co-op.  Both of the kids find this class intense and difficult.  It's a 3 hour class once a week but there is a lot of work assigned so they require at least 1 hour a day for homework.

Trig/PreCalc Saxon--this is Kendell's math class at the co-op.  She likes math.  She tells me it makes sense, there is always an answer.  I had her take 2 math classes last year so she could get into this advanced math class this year.  She really won't need to take another math class her senior year; although she'd probably willingly take another one because she likes it so much.

Alg 2 Saxon--this is Ben's class for math at the co-op.  I'll push for him to take the Trig/PreCalc class next year.

History is PACES American History.  We do this class daily (well, we have been known to miss it once in awhile).  I like to read the material aloud with Kendell and Ben because I like to stay up on what they are doing.  I realize they would prefer not to have me read with them.  Just tell them what pages to complete and get on with it.  I still press to read the material aloud because I want to have discussion with them about the topic.  That is hit and miss; when you're 16 you really don't care about the Federalist Papers.

English, we kind of made up on our own.  I never felt that my children were reading enough of the classics in their private school in Iowa so I was determined that this year with me homeschooling we would read read read.  They both had had what I thought was excessive grammar though.  So, we started off with reading Catcher In The Rye, then The Screwtape Letters, and To Kill A Mockingbird.  We are currently reading a nonclassic :o) called The Fifth Seal which is a biblically accurate work of fiction about the birth of Jesus.  Each day we discuss what they were assigned to read.  I want to make sure that they are reading what I assign (because Kendell was famous for doing spark notes for what little assigned reading she had in private school) and I'm hoping that disucssion brings up some deep conversations.  We always read the next chapter aloud as a group and then I assign the next two chapters for silent reading.  I do not test at this point.  I'm also going to start in January assigning some writing with Daily Warm-Ups by Walch.  I just bought the SAT prep book of this series.

Vocab was a disaster from the start.  I had purchased Classical Roots grade 11 for Ken and Ben.  It is so ridiculously out of any 11th graders league that we all hate it.  Honestly, if I was giving them grades for this class they would both have C's, it's just that awful.  So, starting this week I threw the book out and am using an SAT word list I found online.  Each week they get 15 words that I will test them over on Thursdays.  During the week of study for that Thursday test they are going to be required to write sentences with those vocab words, orally quiz them over the spelling of those words and copy down the words and their meanings.

Bible class is something I've struggled with.  I had bought the 11th grade Bible curric. from Landmark Freedom Baptist but it's not very meaty so we just dumped it.  I bought a Bible study by Max Lucado but that was so fluffy I thought as well.  I did come across a book in a series called Spiritual Discovery Series.  The topic of this book is The Sanctity of Life.  It covers the Bible's view on suicide, contraception, murder, abortion etc.  Great topics that will lead to some meaningful discussions I hope.  Each lesson is just long enough and has lots of Bible verses to support the author's points.

What I need for these two is push writing.  I need to assign a couple of research papers.

For Miss Julia in 6th grade:
Math is Saxon 6/7 that she takes at the co-op.  One day a week for a couple of hours but a lot of homework that is requing at least 1 hour a night of homework.

Science is BJU for 7th grade.  Also taken at the co-op and also requiring at least 1 hour of homework each night.

History/Geo:  When we left Iowa Julie was in private school studying BJU World History.  I was going to keep on with that but then I changed my mind.  I wanted to start homeschool off with a bang for Julie so she would immediately find it enjoyable.  Julie loves to learn about other cultures and countries.  I bought the BJU 9th grade Geography.  It's not wonderful but I like how it is broken up.  Right now we're on Europe.  We read through the chapter in the book and then I required her to learn the first 24 countries from that chapter, learning all their capitals, their form of government and their primary religion.  I am so proud of her memorizing all of those!  I let her pick 1 country from that chapter (she chose United Kingdom) and she is doing a big project on it.  We sat down and discussed what she wanted to learn about that country and she is now doing research on those topics to form a written report, create a visual board and she is also going to find a recipe to make a common food from that country.  She will make her presentation next week to our family (when dad is home from work).  Next she needs to memorize where each of those 24 countries are located on the world map...where exactly is Andorra?  :o)  Then we'll move on to Eastern Europe and do the same thing.  This is Julie and I's favorite class and we both love the reading time we share with it.

Vocab was the same disaster with Julie.  We are now using a word list from 8th grade and doing the same process as Kendell and Ben.

English is Rod & Staff 6th grade.  We do a lesson every day except we place it on hold when she is doing a large research project like the one on the United Kingdon because in my opinion that includes all aspects of Language Arts.

I have brought Julie into Kendell and Ben's required reading for Literature class.  She read To Kill A Mockingbird and is reading The Fifth Seal with us as well.  She's doing really well and isn't afraid to ask questions if she doesn't understand something.  I think we're going to do A Tale of Two Cities next.

Bible class is kind of on hold for Julie because I can't find what I need for her.  She is faithful to do her devotions though every night so for now that is going to have to do.

I need to get Julie in a good writing curric.  She loves to write stories so I want to embrace that.  I found one at the homeschool store and I think I'll purchase that in the next week and get her moving on that starting the first of January.

Ron Paul, biggest quack in the Presidential race

It was obvious before but the debate the other night just  brought to the public's attention yet again, Ron Paul is a quack.  And, I believe quite power hungry.  I highly doubt this man is interested in the betterment of the U.S. because he could not even say that he would support the Republican nominee if it was not him; that's because he'll split the Republican votes and run as an Independent hurting the Republican bid for election and possibly leaving us stuck with the Big O for another 4 miserable years.

I'm not really a Michelle Bachmann fan but she is absolutely right when she says Paul's thoughts on Iran are dangerous.

Just listening to Paul speak during the debate he comes across to me very exasperated, coming across as unprofessional.  I'm sure many a person would say he has down to earth, every day speech but I just don't get that.  And to think he is a doctor....hmpf.

Wednesday is Coupon Grocery Shopping Day!

I love Wednesdays because the new store ads come out.  I look forward to the kids going to their homeschool co-op in the morning so I can rush off to the stores.  Gosh, just rereading my last sentence...I really am pathetic aren't I?  :o)

So for the Houston area today I scored on Libby's canned vegetables.

Foodarama had the corn and green beans for Libby's 2/$1.  With my coupon I got them for .25 a can.  I bought 12 cans.  The Progresso Soup was on sale (vegetable classics only) as well and I was able to buy 8 cans at .75 a can.  My 16 year old is a big soup eater beacause he's always dieting and working out.

Tonight I ran over to Foodtown and they also had the Libby's veggies on sale but had other varities so I got the mixed vegetables for .25 a can there.  I bought only 4 using my last Libby's coupons.  International Delight creamers were on sale for 1.33 a piece and I got them for .83 each with my coupons.  I bought 6.  The TGI Friday Entree For One were on sale for 1.89 each and I was able to get them for .89 each.  I was only able to buy 3 but I know the kids will love them for lunch.  I had a $2 off coupon for Delimex and Foodtown had their Delimex bowls for 3.99.  Each box has 3 bowls so that was a great deal but I only had 4 coupons!!!

I would love to be able to purchase in huge quantities but I just don't have that much time to collect all those coupons.  I'm a long ways from being on Extreme Couponing.  :o)

Little girls want to grow up to be models

My Julie has been watching a lot of TV shows about models lately.  She announced to me tonight that she wants to be a model.  I tried explaining that models are 5'10 and she has the potential to max out at 5'4.  :o)

Coupons Coupons Coupons oh how I love thee!

The girls and I have been watching TLC's Extreme Couponing lately.  Well, we watch almost everything TLC ...except for Cake Boss, I hate that show.

Anyway, we love the extreme couponers.  These women are amazing!  I want a stockpile like they have in their homes.  With my girls (Julie is 11 & Kendell is 16) egging me on we decided to visit the local recycle bin recently and loaded up on thrown out coupons.  Yes, that makes me a dumpster diver.  Hey, it's what they do on the show!

After watching the show for several weeks I finally understand the concept of using coupons.  Before I always felt like "why bother" because the coupons didn't help me when I could buy the generic cheaper, but I get now that you purchase with the coupons when the items are on sale (a great sale).  And, having multiple coupons helps you stock up on one item that is on sale.  Guess what?  It works.  It works wonderfully!

A few of my deals;  5 bottles of Excedrin 24 ct with coupons I actually made $3 with this purchase.  4 jars of pasta sauce at .64 a jar.  2 packages of Schick disposable razors 12ct and I made .06.  Old Spice body wash, I got 6 bottles and they were $1 a piece....around here they run $4 a bottle.  There are lots more I just have lost track.

Give it a try, but I'm not gonna tell you where my recycle bin is...that's top secret!

Why I Won't Vote For Mitt Romney

Although Mitt is falling in the polls he has been often the "candidate to beat".

Even when Mitt was running last time I had the same viewpoint.  My mother really likes him and insists that his faith should have nothing to do with whether or not he is a good president.  Many people in the U.S. feel the same way.  I don't.

Any person that believes that an angel named Moroni delivered gold tablets to a man and was given seer stones that allowed him to translate gold tablets is capable of believing any other kind of hokie ideas.  Our country just can't afford such a risk.

Now I realize everyone says that Mitt won't bring his faith into his job as President.  It's his personal relationship with God.  That's nice and all but the bottom line is; to be a Mormon you must believe this is how Joseph Smith got the Mormon bible.  If he believes this as a Mormon what other things would people be able to convince him of.  What would happen if Ahmadinejad told Mitt he wants to be the U.S.'s friend and that he means no harm to Israel?  How easily can Mitt be convinced of that if he can easily be convinced of gold tablets and seer stones?

Dr Michael Brown on Youtube

My kids are always saying, "Mom loves the Jews.  She wants to be a Jew."  Ok, I do love the Jews, that's true.  They have an amazing history.  I'm big on Jews For Jesus too.

Here is a link to one of Dr Michael Brown's many videos on Youtube.  I watch all of them.  Because of him I have learned so much about the fullfillment of the OT in the NT.

Kendell playing volleyball

Good Run ISU Cyclones Women's Volleyball

My 16 year old daughter, Kendell is volleyball crazy and her favorite team is our hometown Cyclones of Iowa State.

Kendell spent her first 11 years of life in Ames and when you are an Ames resident it is all things Cyclones.  After moving to Waterloo at 11 her passion for the Cyclones has only increased.  The only thing she'd rather be doing than watching the Women's Volleyball team is playing volleyball herself.

Tonight we watched the Cyclones in their last game in the NCAA finals.  It was a great run of 5 sets but in the end Florida State prevailed.  I think Kendell and I were louder than most men when they watch football!

Since moving to Houston this fall Kendell has insisted she'll never play volleyball again.  We homeschool but she does have opportunities to play club volleyball here but she says it's pointless.  It just rips my heart out and I'm praying that when volleyball season rolls around she'll want to play on a club team.  Her dream is to play college volleyball.  This past volleyball season was her best yet as she finished the season as team MVP and made 1st Team All Conference for her position of Libero.

Just more mom guilt for me to deal with.

And to think I titled this post about the Cyclones Volleyball Team.  Rambling got hold of me again.

Like I have the attention span to keep a blog up!

Seriously, how long will I be able to keep this up?  :o)

I'm fairly sure I'll forget my password or the web address to this blog in a week but for now, I'm going with it.  Only I would come up with this idea at 12:20 AM.  This is what happens when my husband leaves the country and the kids are ignoring me with their video games.

I do love Facebook and it's a wonderful source for keeping in touch with everyone but I often find myself wanting to say more than the simple one liners for status updates.  There was a time when I could write for hours at a time rambling on with different ideas but I never seem to sit down and do that anymore.  So, maybe, just maybe this little blog will be an outlet for that.
